Want to see Andrea Gibson!?

On Friday, April 13th (starting at 7pm) Andrea Gibson will be in Portland performing their spoken word! "Andrea Gibson is not gentle with their truths. It is this raw fearlessness that has led them to the forefront of the spoken word movement– the first winner of the Women’s World Poetry Slam —Gibson has headlined prestigious performance venues coast to coast with powerful readings on war, class, gender, bullying, white privilege, sexuality, love, and spirituality."

Chastity Brown, "a banjo-playing soul-singer" and "a rocking, rolling encyclopedia of roots music" will be opening for them! You can read more about the event here.

The venue (Wonder Ballroom) and the event organizer (Mike Thrasher Presents) have given Marrow a few tickets in order to be able to take some youth to this event!!

Want to win one of those tickets?!

Here's how you can try:
(*you must be under 25 years old)

  1. Watch Andrea Gibson's spoken word video "Your Life" (here).

  2. Create an artistic response to the piece!

Your response can be seemingly unrelated to Andrea's piece content-wise, as long as there's a connection of some sort. Perhaps you'd like to attempt a similar performance style, or maybe a specific line struck you and you'd like to expand on that, or maybe the subject matter was resonant and you'd like to write about something in your own life that formed who you are - whatever inspires you to create.

Your response can be any medium - a poem or prose, a song, a spoken word piece, even visual art incorporating text.
  3. Send it to us by 11pm ON APRIL 2ND!! It can be in written format, video, audio - whatever makes the most sense for you. You can email it to us, DM or post it on instagram (make sure we comment that we've seen it!), or come by the space and give us a hard copy. If you need help figuring out how to get it to us, send an email to info@marrowpdx.org and we'll help you out.
  4. A panel of writers/performers will review the submissions, select the winners, and notify them by April 7TH!

For parents: both Daylynn and Briauna will be present for the whole event, with a group of ten youth. We can arrange to meet you outside the venue for pick-up/drop-off if you'd like. For youth who are under 18 and are not enrolled at Marrow there will be a permission slip to be signed.
